Estate Loch Bookings

Fishery manager John Steele co-ordinates the fishing of the machair lochs, whilst reservations, allocation of boats and requests for ghillies are made through contacting Sheena at our main office. Click here to get in touch

Lochs are allocated on a rota basis to give anglers a chance to sample the variety of lochs in the system.

It is against the law to fish for migratory fish (sea trout and salmon) on a Sunday in Scotland and brown trout fishing has traditionally been limited to less public areas on a Sunday

Ghillies

Ghillies can be arranged by the Estate and are primarily available for brown trout and salmon/sea trout lochs, however there is a limited availability for the remote lochs on the East.

We would recommend the use of a ghillie whilst fishing the South Uist lochs due to the strong winds that blow regularly – a ghillie will master your boat and provide better control of drifts. Windy weather does however yield best fishing results.
Some lochs are heavily weeded although this is important for feeding. These lochs are more productive when fished with a ghillie as they use their knowledge and experience to  navigate around these weeded areas to your advantage.

Please note – ghillies are paid direct and can be an invaluable asset to you though sharing advice and experience of fishing South Uist lochs

Size & Bag Limits

All undersized fish must be carefully returned if below the following weights.

  • Brown Trout (Machair and Hill Lochs) – 10oz
  • Sea Trout – 1lb 8oz
  • Salmon – Release all

Whilst we do not have specific bag limits, we are asking anglers for their co-operation, especially on our machair lochs and sea trout systems, to only kill those fish required for the table. We urge anglers to continue to do this and preserve our wild stocks to guarantee enjoyment for all our visiting anglers for many years to come.

The percentage returned for the 2020 season was as follows:

  • Brown Trout – 92%
  • Sea Trout – 96%
  • Salmon – 100%
